SQA three part comic series based loosely on the The Sarien Encounter. According to Roger Wilco (Okay, Space Cadets Listen up!), its a comic book story adapting the 'real' Wilco's story, much like the film deals, book deals, etc, that Roger had after SQ1 in various timelines and universes. That is to day it more or less represents an 'in-universe' comic that Roger has himself read (with artistic 'license' and all).
Plot Synopsis[]
Issue 1: The Sarien Encounter[]
We find the Arcada adrift in space. On board the ship, Roger Wilco is tied up, because his supervisor, Colonel Bodge, is about to remove Roger from his life. However, Roger manages to break free from his binds and punches Bodge in the head, causing it to explode and release strange singing aliens, whose singing is intersperced by a loud, piercing noise.
Suddenly, Roger awakens, and we find that he was napping in the Broomcloset, the singing he heard coming from a walkman he was wearing and the loud noises coming from outside. Realizing what time it is, Roger attempts to get back to work before anyone (particularly his supervisor) notices he wasn't working. However, when he exits the closet, he finds a lot of dead bodies, and no response from the communicator. Making his way up to the Main Level, he finds a group of Sariens beating up Doctor Matthew Frye before warping out.
Roger races out to check on the doctor after the Sariens are gone, but all the doctor can do is tell him the Sariens have stolen the Star Generator and gives him a microtape containing detailed information on how to stop the Star Generator before dying. Just as the doctor dies, Roger hears the Self-Destruct Sequence is beginning, so he quickly races for an escape pod. Fortunately for him, there's a convenient "Emergency 60-second launch button" that allows him to get off the Arcada before it explodes.
After recovering from the G-forces of the emergency blast-off, Roger tries to learn how to control the pod, and ends up activating a voice-command module, which, much to his chagrin, is powered by an artificial intelligence who is willing to have fun at Roger's expense. The computer soon guides Roger to a crash-landing on the planet Kerona. Roger gathers supplies, including a blaster, and clips the AI Unit to his belt before setting off.
It's not long before he's attacked by a Sarien Spider Droid, and since the blaster isn't doing much, Roger takes his chances by diving into a nearby cave. After a close encounter with the grate monster, which results in him losing his blaster in a cave-in, he encounters the Keronian who says he will help Roger with his plight only if he first deals with the Orat and brings back proof of his success.
After riding a turbolift back to the surface, Roger finds a cave, out of which jumps a bizarre creature. Thinking that's the Orat, Roger prepares to come down and take him out, but suddenly the creature is quickly killed by the real Orat, who proceeds to smack Roger around as well. Getting a desperate idea, Roger grabs his can of Dehydrated water and throws it into the Orat's mouth, causing it to bulge up and explode. Roger grabs his proof, and the Keronians teleport him back to them.
The Keronians explain to Roger what he has to do to stop the Star Generator after checking the microtape. They then provide Roger with a Skimmer to make the trip to Ulence Flats where he can find transporation off of Kerona. The issue ends with Roger's arrival at Ulence Flats.
Issue 2: Death To The Deltaur![]
Roger has arrived at Ulence Flats, and finds Tiggy's Rocket Bar. An alien offers to park Roger's skimmer, which he accepts. Roger then enters the bar and orders a Kerona Ale. He then overhears two other aliens talking about a close encounter with the Deltaur in Sector HH. Roger then finds Mike and asks him about where he can find a spaceship. Mike directs Roger to Tiny, but tells him to get some money, first. Roger thinks he can sell his Skimmer, but needs to get it back from the valet. Mike informs him that Tiggy's doesn't have valet parking, so Roger needs a new plan. Mike suggests Roger try gambling.
Roger heads over to play the Slots-O-Death, and ends up spinning three skulls. However, the two aliens he eavesdropped on tap him on the shoulder, and end up getting hit by the disintegrating laser instead. The confused Roger plays the slots again, and this time, he hits the jackpot. Roger's ready to take the money and buy himself a spaceship.
However, when Roger exits the bar, a strange alien offers to show him "a deal he couldn't beat with a stick." This ends up being an attempted hold-up, which ends in a bizarre meta way involving the deaths of a strange alien, the narrator, and the mugger. Roger finally makes it to Tiny's Used Spaceship Lot, only to be surrounded by salesmen. Roger manages to escape the salesmen, only to collide with Tiny. After some "negotiations," Roger buys a Belchfire Overblast and takes off.
However, the ship wasn't Tiny's to sell, and it isn't long before Roger realizes that the ship is reported stolen, and the Keronian Police are hot on his tail. Roger manages to lose them in an asteroid field, but the ship is damaged. It's losing fuel, it's losing air, and to make matters worse, it's wound up right in the line of fire of the Deltaur!
Issue 3: To Boldly Go Where No Man Has Mopped The Floor![]
The issue begins with Roger Wilco's ship right in the Deltaur's line of fire. Roger quickly dons a jetpack, and tells the computer to blow the hatch. When the computer refuses, Roger destroys it and blows the hatch himself. He is blown into space when the Deltaur opens fire, destroying Roger's ship.
Roger manages to stabilize the jetpack and head for the Deltaur. However, his jetpack runs out of fuel and he realizes he's going to overshoot it. Showing some surprisingly quick thinking, he removes the CO2 Tank from his jetpack and spews its contents as a makeshift rocket in order to drive him back to the Deltaur. This works, and Roger manages to make it into an airlock before asphyxiating.
A couple of Sariens came to investigate the opening of the Airlock, but find nothing since Roger had already hidden himself in a air vent. However, they plan to space the lock, which means Roger's forced to scramble to an emergency shaft and grab a hold of a ladder so he's not sucked into space again. Roger makes his way through the access tunnels and ends up dropping into the Deltaur's laundry room. Hearing someone coming, he quickly dives into the nearest washing machine.
The Sarien, Bruno, throws his clothes into the laundry and starts it up. Soon, Roger is spit out, dressed in a Sarien uniform. He manages to get a helmet on before the Sariens see him, and while they kick him out of the laundry room, Roger now has a functioning disguise. While making his way through the Deltaur, he hears about a human being held on Deck Q, and thinking it's a political bigwig or maybe a knockout princess, Roger sneaks a tray of food and brings it to the prisoner, who turns out to be his supervisor, Colonel Bodge.
Bodge, however, is not happy to see Roger, and his shouting attracts the attention of some Sarien Guards. Roger quickly uses the tray's reflective surface to deflect the Pulseray blasts back at the Sariens. Bodge disguises himself in one of the Sarien uniforms as well, and starts leading the way to the Deltaur's shuttle dock (completely ignoring the massive sign that says the shuttle dock's the other way).
Their route, however, leads them past the Star Generator, which is about to fire on Kerona. Roger tries to tell Bodge that they need to stop the generator, but Bodge has had enough of Roger and punches him hard enough to shatter his helmet's face mask and expose him. Roger, however, manages to slip away from the Sariens and make his way to the armory.
Roger manages to escape with a Pulseray and some gas grenades, but soon finds himself in a Sarien crossfire. He manages to jump out of the way, landing on the guard of the Star Generator, and setting off one of the gas grenades. He then inputs the Star Generator Destruct Code he got from Kerona, then legs it for the Shuttle Bay.
He ends up in the same shuttle as Bodge, who is busy trying to figure out the ship's display. Roger, however, simply pushes the "Launch" button, and the shuttle blasts away from the Deltaur just as it explodes. Roger is joyous, believing this will earn him the Distinguished Service Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster. However, it turns out that Colonel Bodge ends up taking all the credit for destroying the Deltaur and gets the medal himself, whereas "his assistant" Roger is awarded the Golden Mop of Xenon instead. Roger, however, accepts this, saying "Oh well... once a janitor, always a janitor!"
Behind the scenes[]
This possibly maybe the Hollyroid/Hollywood adaptation of Roger's story as Roger Wilco resembles Buck Bucko or Darth Lumix in many scenes. The story takes many liberties with the original story mixing elements of SQ1EGA and SQ1VGA., this could be the Space Quest 1: The Sarien Encounter (future version) version of the story as well.
