Space Quest 3D: The Pirates of Pestulon is a free fangame created by Turbo Chimp, with version 1.0 being released on June 2, 2023.[1][2][3] It is a 3D remake of Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon, and is not to be confused with Space Quest III 3D, a cancelled project by Kjell Emanuelsson.
Differences from the original[]
Benefits[]
- High quality (3D) graphics instead of EGA
- Point and click interface instead of text parser
- Open world movement instead of confined rooms (screen reloads only when switching to whole different sections)
- Much easier arcade sequences
- Ability to wear the Official Astro Chicken Flight Hat for more than one brief scene
Controversial decisions[]
- Slightly different scores (e.g. no extra points for grabbing the Invisibility belt with the Orat on a Stick, and stopping to show points altogether once freeing the Two Guys From Andromeda from Jello)
- Not getting ambushed by a rat (Biff) after taking the Rats' lair's Auxiliary Reactor
- No ability to enter the Rats' lair from the standard surface (probably since not meeting Biff spares a need to return there)
Background[]
The classic Sierra adventure "Space Quest III" reimagined in luscious 3D complete with voice acting!
The Two Guys From Andromeda, designers of the graphically extravagant (and satirically sensational) Space Quest series, have disappeared into thin oxygen! Hysterical game fanatics around the world await word on the whereabouts of these celestial celebrities!
Who could be the mastermind behind this evil plot?
Could it be the Pirates of Pestulon, known for their plundering, preying and unprincipled practices? Or maybe the legions of Space Quest fans who would kill to be the first to play Space Quest III (the graphic adventure game with the closest thing yet to motion picture-quality animation). Not to be forgotten are the monkey-suited minions of Sludge Vohaul (from our last episode), who would love to make banana pudding out of those responsible for putting them behind bars.
Who are the dirty deed doers behind our daring duo's demise? Is it too late to save the two guys from a disgusting and downright despicable doom?
Holy SpaceWaste, space adventurers, find out for yourself as Roger Wilco, intergalactic garbageman, returns to the rescue!
Development[]
The project was first revealed on February 22, 2022 by Turbo Chimp, the creators of Mercury Blue. As massive fans of Sierra, they wanted to recreate Space Quest III using the Unity engine with the hopes of releasing it within a matter of months.[4] On the 8th of May, the team got into the "Beta" phase of development, fully implementing the puzzles while completing both the soundtrack and voice acting.[5] A month later, they showcased some voice clips from Mike Holmes, the game's primary voice actor who provided the roles for the Narrator, Arnoid the Annihilator, Elmo Pug, and many others[6]
On May 25, 2023, Turbo Chimp declared June 2 as the release date for Space Quest 3D, which came out eight days later.[7]
